Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has successfully delivered the first Metropolis metro trainset for Chennai Metro’s Phase II project. Manufactured entirely in India, these driverless trains are designed to operate at speeds up to 90 km/h, with a standard operational speed of 80 km/h.
The production of these trainsets commenced in February 2024 at Alstom’s state-of-the-art facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The project encompasses the delivery of 36 trainsets, each comprising three cars, intended for the 26 km corridor connecting Poonamallee Bypass to Light House, which includes 28 stations—18 elevated and 10 underground.
These trains are equipped with advanced features such as Automatic Train Operation (ATO) and Automatic Train Protection (ATP), enabling Unattended Train Operations (UTO) at Grade of Automation level 4 (GoA 4). Additionally, they incorporate a regenerative braking system to enhance energy efficiency.
Under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the trains were designed in Bangalore and built at the Sri City manufacturing facility. Alstom’s commitment to local manufacturing aligns with India’s vision for self-reliance in advanced transportation solutions.
Alstom’s association with Chennai Metro dates back to 2010, having previously delivered 208 metro cars for Phase I of the project. The successful delivery of the first trainset for Phase II underscores Alstom’s ongoing commitment to enhancing Chennai’s urban mobility landscape.
